FUG unions, Congregation, distance selves from petitions, pass vote of confidence on VC

The Joint Action Committee of Unions (JAC) and Congregation of the Federal University Gusau have dissociated themselves from a petition written on the University’s Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Internal Council Members representing the Senate of the University.

The FUGUS JAC comprises of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) respectivelly.

The Information Officer of the University, Umar Usman in a statement issued to Newsmen in Gusau the Zamfara State Capital on Sunday, explained that, the Chairmen of the Four Unions have announced their disassociation in a communique issued after their emergency meeting on Thursday 17th September, 2020 have signed the stand of the Unions on the issue of a petition claimed to have been written by the concerned members of the University staff.

The four Unions, however, expressed their dismay over the way and manner some individuals are so determined to bring the lasting peace being enjoyed in the young University to an end.

“We and our members have nothing to do with the petition and we are fully satisfied with the way the VC and Management of the University are steering the affairs of the University and those who wrote some petitions are not members of any of the Unions in the University”, the Unions said in the communique” .

The members of the University’s Congregation which is the third organ of the University apart from Council and Senate, and also the largest in terms of membership of staff at the end of the meeting passed vote of confidence on the Council members elected by the Senate to represent them in the Council and the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Magaji Garba.

“A motion was moved by a member of the Congregation for a vote of confidence to be passed on the elected internal Council members and the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Magaji Garba and was seconded and unanimously adopted by the Congregation which is the largest organ of the University in terms of membership of staff”.

The congregation finally commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Magaji Garba for his steadfastness in running the affairs of the University and for stabilizing it despite efforts being made by some individuals to cause havoc in the University.

It would be recalled that in August this Year, some aggrieved members of staff of the Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara state, have accused the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Magaji Garba, of allegedly obtaining N4million loan from one of the school’s contractors.
The concerned members of the school in a petition dated 5th August, 2020 and addressed to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, accused the embattled Vice Chancellor Prof. Magaji Garba of alleged acceptance of bribe to the tune of one million naira.
