ASATTAHIR International Foundation made Submission at the Public Hearing of the House Committee on Social Welfare of the Sokoto State House of Assembly on a Bill for the Enactment of a Law against Discrimination of People Living with Disabilities:
On the invitation of the International Republican Institute (IRI) ASATTAHIR International Foundation has made presentation in a Public Hearing organized by the House Committee on Social Welfare on a Bill to enact a law prohibiting discrimination against people living with disabilities. The Public Hearing was held at one of Committee Rooms in the State Assembly Complex, today the 28th August, 2020.
After brief introduction by member representing Gada East State Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Social Welfare, various CSOs and NGOs and platforms of people living with disabilities made observations and contributions on the proposed bill.
On it part, ASATTAHIR International Foundation, through its Executive Secretary, Prof. Yahaya Tanko Baba observed among other things the need for the establishment of special schools in the three Senatorial Districts to enhance access to education for the disabled. As equalizer of opportunities, it was argued that access to education is key to reducing the rate of discrimination against people with disabilities.
At the end of the interaction, the committee Chairman thanked all for their contributions and assured them that the committee will integrate all the necessary comments in the bill and encourage people to submit written memorandum to the committee.
The interaction ended with a closing prayer by a volunteer.
